How Chemical Peels Transform Your Complexion

Chemical peels are tired, damaged skin’s best friend and regular treatments can radically improve the appearance of your facial skin, decolletage, and neck — some even have their aging hands treated.

The acids in chemical peels are where these treatments get their power. Each peel has a different concentration designed to remove dull layers of your skin and encourage faster cell turnover, which your body struggles to do as it ages.

But chemical peels are more than just a surface-level solution. Our patients love chemical peels because they transform skin quality from the inside out, helping it act younger and healthier. Applying the acid solution causes micro-trauma, stimulating your body’s collagen production and making your skin firmer, healthier, and more elastic.

In this blog, Dr. Chinyere Orafu and our team at Ohio Laser & Wellness Centers highlight a few key benefits of getting regular chemical peels

Treatments tailored to you

There’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all chemical peel. There are a few types of peels based on what bothers you most. Here’s a closer look.

Light chemical peels affect only the epidermis — the outermost layer of your skin — so they’re a great option if you’re only concerned with superficial issues. You may hear some call them lunchtime peels because you can get them over your lunch break and return to your day without any downtime. You can get light chemical peels more frequently since they don’t affect your skin as much as other peels.

Medium peels do everything light peels can do, but they reach down into the next layer of skin (the dermis) to address acne, wrinkles, and scarring. You may notice some redness and even blistering for a couple of weeks after your treatment, and you should only have one once a year.

We may recommend a deep peel if you have deep wrinkles, creases, or scars. Deep peels can also remove precancerous lesions. If you get deep chemical peels, expect more downtime, side effects, and spaced-out treatments.

Here are some other skin benefits of chemical peels.

Decrease age spots or freckles

Gone are the days of covering your spots with globs of makeup. Light chemical peels help tone down your sun spots, age spots, and freckles

Melasma managed

Melasma is a common skin problem that causes brownish patches to show up on your face, typically your cheek, chin, nose bridge, forehead, and upper lip. Pregnancy, taking hormones and nursing are among the most common causes of melasma.

Light peels can save the day by carefully smoothing out your skin tone and reducing the appearance of the pigmented patches.

Acne arrested

If you battle non-inflammatory comedonal acne, we recommend a medium or deep chemical peel to clear up your skin. The peels effectively remove dead skin cells from the outermost layer of your skin and keep your pores from clogging up and triggering a breakout.

Wave goodbye to wrinkles

Medium to deep chemical peels get down to the deepest layers of your skin and prompt your body to produce more collagen. As your collagen production ramps up, your skin becomes firmer, and you start seeing fewer and fewer wrinkles.

This process is also effective in reducing the appearance of scars.

Say hello to smoother skin

Whether you’re a lunchtime peeler or come in occasionally for a deep peel, your skin turns out smoother and younger-looking. With your skin's dead, dull outer layers sloughed off, fresh, young skin takes center stage.

Give your face a lift

Chemical peels can decrease the need for a facelift surgery and decrease the frequency of injectables, and you notice that your skin feels more elastic and lifted after your treatment.
